Overview

Established in 2000 as a concept by Buzz Burrell, Peter Bakwin and Jeff Schuler, Fastest Known Times (FKTs) – the record time for any kind of course, but generally of long distances and often in remote locations – are a growing phenomenon. Speed records on varied and oft-surprising routes, they can be plotted, run and broken by anyone – or at least those with the grit to take them on (and record them on their GPS device). Spurred on by the coronavirus pandemic, which saw marathons and other long-distance events cancelled, recognized FKTs cover everything from iconic trails, like the UK’s Pennine Way and the Appalachian Trail in the USA, to remote routes in Nepal, Mongolia and Namibia.

This is the first book on FKTs and the routes and superhumans who have conquered them, collecting the most iconic, impressive and interesting FKT routes in a single volume. The contents – a mixture of A, B and C routes – has been carefully selected by the ‘Father of FKT’, Buzz Burrell: ultrarunner, former FKT holder and co-founder of the original FKT site, where all new records are logged and archived. Burrell once hitchhiked some 80 miles (123 kilometres) from his home in Boulder, Colorado – returning along remote trails with scarcely more than a straw hat and a credit card in hand. It took him two days. His embodies the spirit of a sport that requires determination, resourcefulness and a love of moving through the great outdoors.

From spectacular locations and stunning photography to the stories behind ambitious FKT attempts and training tips from those who’ve run them – including sporting greats like Jasmin Paris, the first female finisher of the Barkley Marathons, and multiple Western States 100 and UTMB winner Jim Walmsley – this highly visual and information-rich book will inspire runners and hikers everywhere to get outdoors, tackle new and surprising routes and to connect with fellow athletes. The specially commissioned infographics and route-mapping make this an inspirational, aspirational and complete guide to FKT.

The Book

Implementing a bold design concept, characterized by strong colour choice and impactful typography, FKT is a book about numbers as much as it is about words. Varied and striking photography appears throughout – wide landscape shots set the scene while details bring moments on the trail to life – but this is also a technical and graphical world, driven by numbers, data, distances and statistics. Specially commissioned mapping, as well as graphs and tables, accompany each route, making the key features easy to grasp within seconds.
There are no frills here – this is a practical and inspirational book for lovers of the outdoors, in a package that feels organic and substantial: just 304 pages bursting with tantalizing routes to explore. The pared-back, confident, typographic cover and hardback binding are the perfect choice for a book paying homage to a sport that marries the simple attractions of movement – putting one foot in front of the other – and the natural world.

The most common food for me in the mountains was sandwiches with avocado, oil and fresh cheese or with some homemade “cacao cream” with beans, cacao, nuts, coconut oil.

The Special Edition

This edition will feature a special, custom-designed slipcase. Wrapped around its front and back, a varnished time stamp reads ‘00:00:00’ in dramatic, italic font – evoking the moment before an FKT attempt begins and the clock starts ticking.

The book will also be signed by a number of eminent FKT holders whose stories feature inside the book.
£1 from every copy of the Special Edition sold will be donated to The Green Runners, a community tackling running’s carbon footprint.

Before the gravitas of closed streets and marked courses came to the world, FKTs were pretty much what people did. People have been running routes and tracking their times forever… [now] we’re doing a better job of keeping track of it all.

Andrew Dawson, Runner’s World

Would I go back and try again? The answer is probably not, and certainly not in the near future… Some things are better left as they are, and I have a feeling this is one of them.
