Overview

The true subject of Erik Madigan Heck’s work is not the model, their clothes, or even the landscape, but rather colour itself. Embracing the alchemical possibilities of light and colour, Madigan Heck creates worlds seemingly outside of time, imbued with an otherworldly glamour.

The Tapestry emerged from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Madigan Heck using the enforced pause as an opportunity to reflect, revisiting a decade’s worth of creations. The flowing, lyrical design - created in collaboration with leading design studio APFEL - weaves a visual narrative that not only traces the evolution of Madigan Heck’s craft, but also the connections between photography, fashion, and the broader spectrum of visual art.

The quality of the printing in The Tapestry is unparalleled, showcasing the artist’s vibrant use of colour in stunning clarity. Printed on 157gsm Caixuan Light Coated paper – known for its exceptional image reproduction and smooth texture – the book’s pages bring each photograph to life with vivid detail and depth. The semi-transparent Sen bible paper wraps add an ethereal quality to the presentation, making the act of turning each page a unique experience.

Featuring 250 illustrations, bolstered by writing and interviews with the Minnesota-born artist, this 360-page monograph is an essential exploration of what it means to be an artist today.

The Book

The collector’s edition of The Tapestry is an extraordinary artifact in its own right. Encased in a luxurious clamshell portfolio box, crafted with a natural ivory wood grain and foiled type to the front, back, and spine, this edition exudes sophistication. The special packaging ensures that each copy remains pristine and elevates the book to a true collector’s item. The hardcover book itself is bound with Lotus cloth in ivory and features real embroidery, adding a tactile elegance that complements the visual feast inside. This attention to detail makes the collector’s edition not just a book, but a work of art.

The arranging of colour is and always will be the most important element in art-making; for colour engages us on a physiological level as well as an existential one.

As an artist, not a photographer – a distinction I find important – my job is to produce work that comes from a place of love.
