Overview

Folium is the first comprehensive collection of Maria (Taehyoung) Jeon’s celebrated Plant Series illustrations, which transform flora – and, at times, fauna – into mesmerizing visions. Initially inspired by the potted plants in her apartment and informed by her understanding of shape and colour as a trained print-maker, Jeon combines close observation with imagination to create bold and otherworldly organic forms that come alive on the page.

Tracing her early Green Leaf works through the Flower, Mushroom and Insect periods – each rooted in the botanical world – the book reveals how each body of work evolves from and builds upon the last. Exclusive extracts from Jeon’s sketchbooks and illuminating texts offer insight into her creative process, while alternate colour schemes and exploratory material add to the feeling of glimpsing behind the curtain.

Designed as an otherworldly botanical catalogue in its own right, Folium offers a covetable portrait of an artist whose work encourages us to see the natural world not simply as a subject to observe, but as a living extension of ourselves.

The Book

The book is bound in a green textured stock, creating an organic feel that complements the body of work. Overlaid is a foil-stamped line illustration; the stylish pared-back design allows the artwork to speak for itself. 
Inside, sketchbook extracts are printed in a single, green Pantone colour on a matt-art paper, marking a switch from the finished artworks to the author’s working process, from sketchbook to screen.

I try to avoid playing it safe or going for the obvious. Instead, I look at plants from a different perspective and express them in my own way. Ironically, having rules is what gives me the freedom to experiment with plant shapes: red for lines, cream for the background and black for overlapping areas.

Collector’s Edition

The premium version of Folium, limited to an edition of 200, is bound in a textured, luxurious white cloth. The artist’s name is foil stamped across the book case in a vibrant poppy orange. This is housed in a handmade slipcase bound in the same cloth, featuring a tipped-on Plant Series image that showcases Jeon’s skill in shape, colour and form. The edition includes an exclusive 250 × 250mm print, signed by the artist, and ships in a custom heavy-duty mailer.

My style changes all the time. I used to worry about that, but now I embrace it – evolving and growing is only natural.

Original Etching Print

Included in the Collector’s Edition is a 250 × 250 mm signed screen print. Since Folium showcases digital works, Jeon wanted to create an original screen print, which will be derived from the Plant 18 depicted here, to provide a tactile contrast, giving readers something authentic to hold and display. Coming from a printmaking background, Jeon will be personally hand-printing the screen prints in Seoul, which will be shared with backers via our regular updates.

It started as a personal challenge to fill a square canvas with plants, playing with shapes and composition to pack everything in as much as possible. As the series continues, the drawings evolve and the nuances shift, but at its heart, it is always about composition, balance, colour and shape – and hopefully sending out positive vibes, too.

Meet the author

Maria (Taehyoung) Jeon is a South Korean artist working from her studio in Seoul. Jeon’s formative years were spent across New Zealand and the UK, bringing a multi-cultural quality to her work that blends Eastern and Western aesthetics. Since 2022, she has actively collaborated with various clients including Printemps, Etro, The Washington Post and Vogue Korea.
