Funding unsuccessful
Dear Videogame Box Works backer,
I’d like to thank you for your support and belief in our project to republish an enhanced version of a truly brilliant videogame book, Videogame Box Works by Hock Wah Yeo. Sadly, despite a great deal of positive feedback from fans of Yeo’s visionary videogame box designs, we fell short of hitting our funding goal, so unfortunately the publication will not be going ahead.
Hock Wah Yeo’s unique design voice marks the high point for videogame packaging design, and it feels particularly relevant to be looking back at the golden age of big box PC game design as games become ever less physical. The comments and encouragement we’ve received in response to this campaign have reminded us just how impactful his work has been for so many people – his transformative Ultrabots box being a prized item in many personal collections.
All pledges will be refunded in full in the coming days – if you have any questions about your pledge or refund, please just drop me a line at darren@readonlymemory.com and I’ll get right back to you. While the campaign was unsuccessful, I will continue to explore ways that we might be able to bring this classic videogame publication back into print.
Thank you again for being part of the campaign – Read-Only Memory has a great many surprises to come this year, so if you’d like to hear about book announcements as soon as they drop, please do sign up for our newsletter here.

@Brent It’s such a shame! This was always a passion project for us, so without crowdfunding, it’s tricky to say how we could get this off the ground. I do very much want to see it happen, so I’ll continue to investigate ways in which we could see this published. I will of course keep everyone here updated should we devise a new plan!
I feel sorry, as this would have been a great book in our collection. I’m sure you will find a way to publish it, and you can count on me to purchase it.
Sorry to hear this!
Well, this is disappointing. I hope this can be resurrected in some manner in the future.
What a huge disappointment. Sourcing an original copy of this book is tough; I’ve tried. I hope this can go forward in some other way.
I’m sorry this happened and hope there’s some way to make the book in the future. It’s one of the better ideas for an art book I’ve seen.
Argh, sorry to hear it didn’t hit the funding target! Is there any possibility of a different form of this book happening? I remember seeing tons of these boxes in stores and it was always the coolest!
