(Don’t Fear) the Proofreader

Dear TOHOGHRBATMGB backer,

A quick dispatch from Read-Only Memory HQ to share the latest progress on The Oral History of Guitar Hero, Rock Band and the Music Game Boom — an epic book with an epic name which sadly does not lend itself to a snappy acronym. That aside, we trust that these rather striking visuals will get you excited about the incredible book that will arrive with you before the end of the year.

This week, we’ve been poring over Epson proofs of the book’s image pages which will feature production artwork from series artist Cameron Scott Davis. Cameron has kindly given us access to his brilliant character and environment artworks for Guitar Hero III, some of which you’ll be able to see in the imagery below.

Alongside these print proofs, we’ve also received prototype samples of the Deluxe Edition slipcase, allowing us to see first hand the subtle ‘amplifier texture’ material that both editions will be bound in. Savor in the tactility below…

On the editorial front, we’re now deep into the copy-edit of Blake’s finished text, polishing interview transcripts, developer recollections, and myriad behind-the-scenes stories from the dawn and heyday of the rhythm game phenomenon. Once this final editorial pass is complete, we’ll be ready to send the entire book into full production.

We’ll be in touch again as we hit the presses – as ever, thank you for your support and patience as we craft the definitive chronicle of plastic guitar controllers, star power, and the series that transformed living rooms into stadium venues/sweaty mosh pits (delete as appropriate).
