A message from Briscoe Park

Dear backer,

Arcana was fully funded in 9 hours. I had no idea what to expect, but it was not that.

This book is not just about We Have A Visitor. It feels like everything I have been making over the last decade finally caught up with me at once. Finishing that collection in the summer going into autumn 2024 felt like closing a chapter. Not that I was going to stop shooting the way I do, but it felt like I had reached the end of a long stretch of road and was standing there, looking back at all of it.

That summer I barely slept. I was driving during the day and shooting most of the night, sometimes staying awake two or three days in a row. Almost every night I was getting at most four or five hours of sleep. The heat and mosquitoes made it hard to rest. I would drag myself back to the car after a long day, put the seat back, and hope for a cool morning to buy a couple more hours. After that run of being out there with the work, I came back home to North Carolina to see my family. I started editing and filing the images, and when I finally saw everything together, I knew it was time to make a book.

So many stages of life had passed. So many miles. So many stories and strange nights with friends, old and new. A lot of what happened will never be written out in detail, but it is all sitting quietly behind these pictures. All that time is now condensed into this book so that it can exist with you. It is bittersweet, because this is the moment I dreamed about when I first bought a camera as a teenager, and now it is here and no longer just a dream. I hope that kid would be proud of this. I do not think he would believe it.

Thank you for taking the time over the years to look at the work, and for caring about it enough to spend your hard-earned money on this book. Now, Volume and I have to actually sit down and build this thing, and that does not happen without you. We are expecting the book to be published by next winter. The wait is long, but I really do think it will feel right when you are holding it in your hands. You might even forget you pledged and one day just have a book show up on your doorstep.

Thank you again. See you in the next update.

I watched your videos on YouTube, stumbling upon your account when I had a less than a week old baby. Your work helped me feel at peace during all those sleepless nights. It was always so exciting to see when a new one was posted. I am thrilled you have a book in the works and I cannot wait to have it in my home. Congratulations, you deserve all the best and thank you for sharing your work with all of us.

It has been such a pleasure randomly stumbling upon your work on Twitter, then YouTube, and now getting to own a piece of it with your John Hancock on it in the not too distant future. Excited, as always, to see what you do next, and may great success continue to find you.
